Ocala Honor Flight Flag Day Reunion

Ocala Honor Flight wants to gather together all those who have helped make the past 4 flights a reality. We would like ALL our World War II veterans, escorts and their families who have gone on previous Ocala Honor Flights to attend a Flag Day Celebration. Proudly wear your hats and dog tags. Prizes will be given away.

We want to celebrate and thank both the veterans and the volunteers who gave their time and service.

Registration begins at 8:30am at American Legion Post 284, 5515 SE 109th Street, Belleview.

Breakfast for $4. Last stop at VFW Retirement Home in Fort McCoy. Lunch $10.

All proceeds go to Ocala Honor Flight.

We also have a new phone number 352-351-9341. Anyone with questions can call and leave a message. It is monitored regularly so phone calls will be return promptly.

October 27, 2011 NOT last Ocala Honor Flight

October 27, 2011 was not the last trip for Ocala Honor Flight. We are already working on an October 2012 flight. The Ocala Honor Flight Committee is a group of very committed volunteers dedicated to transporting as many World War II veterans to Washington as possible to visit their memorial.

The emphasis going forward is the safety of the veterans. Trey Adams was the flight coordinator for October 27, 2011 and will continue to lead in 2012. He has noticed the health concerns of our aging WWII vets. Dr. Frank Fraunfelter, an emergency room physician, and a group of paramedics travels with each flight. In addition, many of the trip escorts have medical backgrounds.

The Ocala Honor Flight fundraiser at the Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery in Ocala on Aug 1 was successful and fun for all who took part. Below are some of the pictures from the event.

The June 14, Flag Day, Ocala Honor Flight to Washington DC was a joyful experience. One hundred and four World War Vets, their escorts and medical teams got to visit the WWII memorial built in their honor, the Korean Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial and the Changing of the Guard at Arlington Cemetery.

They left Ocala in the early hours of June 14 and came back that same night around 10 p.m. They were met with several hundred people cheering their service and honoring the time they spend in service.

Pictures of the event were taken by Ocala Banner staff photographer Bruce Acherman at Ocala Honor Flight ., and the projects official photographer, Erik Stellmond at http://www.eventmugshots.com/Events/Honor-Flight. The photographer for the Ocala Magazine also was part of the flight and there will be a story in the publication in coming months.

Everyone is invited to go to the sites to see the pictures as well as take part in the next flight scheduled for sometime in October. Veterans, escorts and volunteers can find and print applications to take part in the next flight on this website.

Join the project to say thanks for World War II Veterans for their service and the fact they saved this country’s freedoms.

There will be other fund raising events, more information will be coming.

Song Written in Honor of WWII Vets

Ocala songwriter Larry Whitler wrote a song in remembrance of the WWII vets and the Honor Flight projects across the country. He is a supporter of the Ocala Honor Flight and has given his permission to post the song on this site.

Support and thanksgiving for the efforts of the generation of men and women who were part of the second World War that saved America’s freedom is always appreciated.

Thanks to all who have given their ideas and creativity to make the May 18 flight now in planning stages a success.
